Those wishing to donate to relief efforts for the war in Ukraine are encouraged to make financial donations to the Catholic Near East Welfare Association, an organization about 100 years old. They have been helping churches in the Middle East for about 100 years. They have been helping churches in Ukraine for the last 20 or more years. To make a donation, you can go to their website, cnewa.org, and click on the appropriate links.
The parish is no longer gathering material to donate to Ukraine. Once refugees start arriving in Ottawa, we will revisit this possibility.
Statement from Fr Augustine Kallumkatharayil, pastor of the Syro-Malabar parish of St. Mother Teresa, on the situation in Ukraine:
Prayers from Syro-Malabar Community Ottawa!
We express our deep solidarity with the Ukrainian community in the context of large-scale illegitimate military attack on Ukraine by Russia.
These are the premeditated darkest hours since World War Two that will bring miserable loss of life and human suffering.
We offer our prayers to Ukraine.
The Fellowship of St. Macrina the Younger is a new parish group being founded at the present time by lay members of our parish to foster spiritual growth through greater observance of the four major fasts of the Eastern Church.
The fellowship would be active during the four major fasts through small groups voluntarily formed and led by lay parishioners who would gather for:
- spiritual study, reflection, and devotion
- where possible, participate in or organize charitable works, pilgrimages, and retreats
- above all be present in the liturgical and sacramental life of the parish.
Participation would involve meeting together in small groups weekly throughout Great Lent & during other fasting periods of the year, and taking on a few personal spiritual disciplines throughout these periods as well.
Activities start on Monday, Feb. 28, the 1 st day of Lent on the Gregorian calendar.
